Most of the time we hear about when the talking heads get going is how bad cell phones are. They cause cancer, we are too connected to them and not to each other, they are creating a culture of young people who don’t know how to interact with each other. Yadaa Yadaa Yadaa. Today I want to talk about why I think cell phones are awesome!!
I watch tv shows from several years ago and when they get themselves into tricky situations where they end up stranded. I shout out at the screen use your cell phone!! Oh wait, 15 years ago not everyone had a cell phone. There was no way to get out of those situations other than find the nearest landline, and that could get very dangerous.
I had a friend who lived in California and there was a major power outage after a big earthquake. She was understandably rattled, and there was no way to get local news from the tv because power had failed. But she had a Smart Phone, and she hopped on there and shared the news about what was happening with her neighbors. It was also nice that Facebook put out a check in when we had hurricane Matthew here in Florida this past fall. Several of my friends got on Facebook Live and posted videos of themselves and the weather conditions which made their friends and family on the other coast feel better.
So yes, cell phones can be isolating. We can grow too dependent upon them. But aren’t most things in life like that? Cars can be a crutch, but people do make an effort to get out and walk. Cell phones can be a crutch, but if you take a few moments to pay attention to what you’re doing, perhaps leave your cell phone in the car when you go to dinner with friends, and decided to pay attention to conversations, then the cell phone once again becomes a tool, not a crutch.
I say that we take the good with the bad, and for me, at least, the good outweighs the bad.
If your cell phone is not behaving well, then bring it on it and it will go from the bad, to the good. Did you get that?
